Curtain of Mist by M. Pardoe6/12/2023 ![]() ![]() In the 1950s they lived with Pardoe's elderly parents in Hampshire. During this illness she began to lose her hearing and from her mid-40s was profoundly deaf. They were forced to sell in 1947, however, when Pardoe almost died from a bout of double pneumonia. Pardoe and her husband set up a country house hotel called Crossacres which became extremely successful their only child Philip was born there in 1939. She wrote under her maiden name but only used her first initial, possibly because she had been teased at school about her rhyming name, and possibly because her publisher thought it might help the books appeal to both sexes. ![]() She married John Swift in 1934 and settled in Somerset where she began The Far Island. Margot Pardoe's childhood provided her with many of the settings for her books: she was born in London, educated in Hertfordshire and Paris, and had holidays in the continent and remote locations in Britain. ![]()

This is how you lose her by junot díaz6/12/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Their social personalities are being modulated through the stories, as signified by the nine stages of plot, and also, Yunior fails to escape the transitional phase of his own commitment issues, meaning that he suffers the death of his brother alone. Yunior and Rafa start the novel in a state of adolescence, which is the body's most obvious experience of flux. The whole novel is set in a state of flux, as seen through this motif. The death represents the stakes of romance, the ultimate reason to commit to someone. Instead of having the emotional support of a true spouse, Yunior suffers the loss alone. It is in light of the challenges of dying and of loss of loved ones that marriage is finally shown to be worth the investment. Diagnosed with cancer, he sees the brevity of life, and the fear of his imminent death shows Rafa clearly why he should commit to one girlfriend and marry her. Books like cloud atlas6/11/2023 ![]() This revelatory novel plunges readers into the halls of a residential school for the deaf, where they’ll meet Charlie, a rebellious transfer student who’s never met another deaf person before Austin, the school’s golden boy, whose world is rocked when his baby sister is born hearing and February, the hearing headmistress, a CODA (child of deaf adult(s)) who is fighting to keep her school open and her marriage intact, but might not be able to do both. ![]() True biz? The students at the River Valley School for the Deaf just want to hook up, pass their history finals, and have politicians, doctors, and their parents stop telling them what to do with their bodies. While YA is not my genre of choice, I was still engaged with the story overall. ![]() I liked this novel overall! I felt I learned so much from it and I’m glad Reese brought a novel like this into the mainstream. ![]()

Homeric hymns6/11/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Many words which have the long /aː/ sound in British English have an /æ/ sound in American English. Specifically, it’s much more common in British English. The /aː/ sound is very different in British and American English. Next, let’s look at the five long vowel sounds. Sometimes, the letters ‘ou’ together can make an /ʊ/ sound, though this is less common. The /ʊ/ sound can be produced by a letter ‘u’ by itself, but also by ‘oo’. Other possible spellings are ‘ou’ and ‘oo’. However, there are also many words where a letter ‘o’ produces the /ʌ/ sound in a stressed syllable. ![]() ![]() The /ʌ/ sound can be produced by a letter ‘u’ by itself. In American English, the /ɒ/ sound is pronounced with the mouth slightly more open and relaxed, and the sound is more nasal. In British English, the sound is pronounced with the mouth more closed, and it’s usually shorter. The /ɒ/ sound is also different in American and British English. A few other spellings are possible, like ‘a’ in some words. The /ɒ/ sound is often produced by a letter ‘o’ by itself. Sweep the coven6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() By the time we had two small children we knew we had to find someplace safer to live. (While I was in NY, I helped edit "The Secret Circle" by L.J. After eight years I was ready for a change, and my husband and I moved back to New Orleans. There was a lot of frenetic energy there, and sometimes that felt very wearing and hard to live with. There was so much to do and see, and so many interesting people to watch. Living in Manhattan was incredible, even though I didn't have a lot of money. My first book, a young, middle-grade chapter book, was published in 1990. Then I went back to New York (Manhattan) and got a job in publishing and started writing. ![]() I went to school in New York, and after school went back to New Orleans. There's an air of lassitude there, a general acceptance of eccentic or flamboyant behavior-the heat simply makes people do crazy things. It's a very beautiful city, and the constant heat and humidity make gardens grow out of control. Kids in other cities have lemonade stands we sold voodoo gris-gris and made wax dolls in the likenesses of our enemies. New Orleans is one of the most interesting American cities, and it has an incredibly rich and exotic culture that had a profound influence on me. ![]() |
